What Floor Please?….The Moon!

My friend sent me an article about a Japanese construction company (Obayashi Corp.) that is planning an elevator to the moon by 2050. It will use carbon nanotube technology and magnetic levitation to move the cars up and down. It’s 59, 651 miles from the earth to the moon and will take 7 days, but the cost is estimated to be significantly less than current launch vehicles.

Very futuristic stuff! 🚀

The Search for an All Region DVD Player

I bought a karaoke DVD player a number of years ago off the internet that has worked well until recently when the remote control stopped working.  I took it apart to see if there was a bad solder connection or something, but no dice. I popped a Japanese DVD that I was wanting to play into another DVD player, but it wouldn’t play giving me a message about being from the wrong region (or something like that).

I searched online at Best Buy (one of the large electronics stores in the US), but didn’t see any All-region DVD players.  I decided to drive to a store near my house to check out what they had.  I was looking around, and a young sales girl asked if I needed any help.  I mentioned I was looking for an All-region DVD player and she was surprised, saying that I was the first person who had asked about that.  She said she has DVDs from Hong Kong and recommended one of the DVD players they sold which plays them. I bought it, treked back home, hooked it up to my T.V. and…..the same message!

I got back in the car, treked back to the store and returned it.  Most major stores in the US only sell Region 1 DVD players. There usually is a symbol on the box that tells what region DVDs it will play.

Region one                                                 DVD-regions
     Region 1  symbol                                                         All-region  symbol

Region 1:   United States, Canada, Bermuda, Caribbean, U.S. territories

Region 2:   Europe, Middle East, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland, French Overseas departments and territories

Region 3:   Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau

Region 4:   South America, Central America, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and much of Oceania

Region 5:   Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho), Central AsiaMongolia, North Korea

Region 6:   China

As you can see from the list above, to play my Japanese DVD I needed one that could play region 2 DVDs. I ended up ordering one online from Amazon which is a lot smaller than my old one.  So far so good even though the menu on the DVD player came up in either Spanish or Portuguese (didn’t look that closely) !  The box for the new DVD player did not have the number symbols shown above.  It had a tag that said “All Multi Region Zone Code DVD Player“. The box also had a FIFA World Cup Brazil logo on it. Interesting.

All region tag

Lesson learned. If you ever want to play DVDs from other parts of the world, you will need to buy an All-region DVD player and may need to order it online.

John Chapter 2: 23-24

Two down and one more verse to go! 🎉

I’m using a screenshot of a free app called “Kougou KJV” for these lessons. It contains the Japanese Kougouyaku translation and English King James Version, both of which are in the public domain. Checkout and download this great app.

Below is a link to a website with the text as well as the audio of the Gospel of John Chapter 2. Try reading the Japanese and then eventually read while listening to the audio. The plan is to  go through all of John Chapter 2 so eventually you should be able to read and listen to the entire Chapter.

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm…

A number of things can make you go hmmm…😳…and for me I see one every day when I drop my daughter at school. As I pass the same house every morning there is a Maserati parked on the street. Based on my astute observations, it appears to be left there overnight.

If it was my car I would have it garaged with a car cover on it and maybe even hire a security guard! Actually I wouldn’t even own a car like that because I would be afraid of getting into an accident, and it would draw too much attention. I’m a kind of low-key guy. I would imagine the repair bills would also be out of sight, but I guess if you can afford a car like that repair bills may not be a huge concern.

I don’t know the exact model…🚘…but think it may be a Ghibli. It looked similar to the one in the Car and Driver link below.
